Thanks to its dense heraldic heritage it is also called «the city of the hundred shields», a name given to it by the former mayor José Antonio Gallego,[4][5] while from its original name (Eliocroca) it takes the title of city of the sun.[1][2][3] Its old town and the castle enclosure,[10] were declared a historic-artistic site on March 5, 1964,[11] the first in the Region of Murcia with this distinction.[12][note 1][note 1]

Undoubtedly the current name of Lorca comes from Arab times, when the medina was known as Lurqa. The meaning of this denomination would be «the battle», probably because it was in this city where the confrontation between the Christian troops of Teodomiro and the Arab forces that invaded the Iberian Peninsula in the VIII century took place.

In field of azure, in the shield appears a castle, that makes reference to the Castle of Lorca. Above it the figure of King Alfonso X «The Wise» armed with a sword in the right hand, symbolizing the means of defense of the city against the enemies and in the left hand holding the key of the city, both in gold. To the right of the castle there is in vertical a sword, of gold, and to the left also in vertical a key, also of gold. Above the shield appears a crown.[13] Around the shield appears the motto of the city in Latin:
